SHBG can be raised because of birth control pills, hypothyroidism, inflammation and more. It’s a real Goldie Locks hormone.  

If it’s too high, you won’t get the benefits of your hormones because they will largely be bound to SHBG and not free.

Boron-containing compounds (BCC) may affect sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) levels. A study found that six hours of boron supplementation significantly decreased SHBG levels. Other studies have shown that boron can impact hormone levels, including:

• Plasma free testosterone: Increased after one week of boron supplementation

• Plasma estradiol: Decreased significantly after one week of boron supplementation

• Dihydrotestosterone, cortisol, and vitamin D: Elevated after one week of boron supplementation

Tongkat ali, also known as Eurycoma longifolia, is an herbal supplement that can increase the levels of free testosterone in the body by reducing the amount of testosterone bound to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG).

Tongkat ali may be beneficial for people who:

• Are dieting for weight loss

• Are middle-aged and experiencing fatigue or depression

• Are athletes who may be at risk of overtraining
